In the third blog in our “How often should I clean this?” series we will be covering the things that should be cleaned monthly.
One cleaning “hack” that has gone viral recently is using dishwasher tablets in your washing machine to clean it. This is something that should NEVER be done! Dishwasher tablets have very different chemical properties to laundry detergent which can cause over foaming and damage to your machine. There is however a simple way of cleaning your washing machine. Pour a mixture of ¼ cup of baking soda and ¼ cup of water into the detergent container and 2 cups of vinegar into the drum. (reviewed.com suggestion) Then simply run the machine on a high heat cycle. Once this has finished you can simply scrub any spots with a sponge dipped in a 50/50 mix of water and vinegar.
For those of us with a front opening machine it is also recommended to leave the door open after any wash cycle to allow the machine to air out and dry completely.
There are 3 simple steps to cleaning a dishwasher according to Today.com
Step 1 – Take out the bottom tray and inspect the drain for food waste. Remove food and gunk stuck in there to improve drainage and prevent dishwasher damage.
Step 2- In a dishwasher safe container, put one cup of white vinegar on a standard wash on the top shelf of the dishwasher. This will remove any grime and grease on the inside of the machine and remove odours too.
Step 3 – Sprinkle a cup of baking soda across the bottom of the machine. Run the machine once more on a short hot wash to leave it stain free and smelling fresh.
Throughout your house blind and curtains will build up dust over time. There are simple ways to clean them that shouldnt take a long time. Vertical curtains are the easiest to clean with a simple way to clean them being to simply use the brush setting on a handheld vacuum setting and to go over both sides of the curtain to remove dust and other particles. For a more intensive clean most curtains can be taken down and machine washed (check manufacturers recommendations).
Blinds are a little more tricky however making use of a pair of tongs and cloth makes for a simple blind cleaning tool. Simply attach cloth or sponge to each side of the pair of tongs and slide over each blind for a simple dusting tool.
Don’t miss out on the final blog in this series coming soon with the things that should be cleaned every 3/6 months. For other great tips and tricks check out our blog and social media pages!

The government has made it clear that cleaners are still permitted to work inside peoples' homes as long as Government Guidelines on social distancing and staying safe are followed (see below). In summary:
You can be outside of your home for work purposes where your place of work remains open and where you cannot work from home, including if your job involves working in other people's homes.
The full text can be found here New National Restrictions from 5 January (in England; there are similar texts available for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). Specifically relating to cleaners, the guidance continues: 'This guidance applies to those working in, visiting or delivering to home environments. These include, but are not limited to, people working in the following areas:
Note this guidance is for people who are fit and well, and is dependent on the following social distancing guidelines being followed:
The good news with regard to cleaning is that the cleaners can social distance from their clients very easily, and we would advise that, if you are at home when they are there, that you remain in a separate room to your cleaner.
If you are happy to adhere to the government guidelines - and if your cleaner has not been in touch already - then please just call the office and we will ensure that your cleaning continues.
Best regards
