Weekly/weekend cleaning is a routine many of us including myself follow. But what really needs cleaning once a week? I’ve put together a list of things that should be cleaned once a week as part of my “How often should i clean this?” series.
Vacuuming carpets and rugs should be a weekly job (more often if your home has pets). This will keep dust, dirt and allergens away to prevent illnesses. Floors such as bathrooms and kitchens should also be cleaned weekly. These can be mopped or steamed. You might want to wash your kitchen floor a little more often as bacteria from food can spread through regular use.
Mirrors are something not many of us think to clean very often. Bathroom mirrors especially should be cleaned weekly as brushing your teeth and cleaning your face can leave water marks and dirt. To clean them simply spray with glass cleaner and wipe over with a microfiber cloth. This should be done in a zig-zag fashion from top to bottom. After this Wipe it over again with a dry microfiber cloth and buff the mirror until dry.
Bedding comes in many different parts, each should be washed at different intervals. Sheets, duvet covers and pillow covers should all be washed once a week. When washing sheets be sure to use a 60 degree wash to kill any bacteria.
The other parts of your bedding should be washed as following:
Duvet: Wash twice a year
Pillows: Wash every 3 months
Mattress protector: Wash every 2 months. If like me you have a thick mattress protector this can often lead to pills forming. A disposable razor is an easy way to remove these without damaging the material!
Mattress: Vacuum every couple of months
Microwaves are a commonly used household appliance that rarely get the care they should. I know I can occasionally be forgetful and only clean it if i forget to cover my bolognese and end up with a disaster! If your microwave hasn’t experienced disaster cleaning it can be done quickly by wiping with a wet sponge, spraying with a green cleaner and letting it set for a couple minutes before wiping it away.
If you, like me, have experienced a microwave related disaster. You can place a bowl filled with ½ water and ½ vinegar in the microwave on full power for 5 minutes. This should loosen any stuck food particles and make wiping it away significantly easier.
I’ve used this blog to talk through the things that should be cleaned at least once a week as part of my series here at Cleanhome York. Be sure to check out my previous blog on things that should be cleaned daily and keep your eyes peeled for more in this series to come!

The government has made it clear that cleaners are still permitted to work inside peoples' homes as long as Government Guidelines on social distancing and staying safe are followed (see below). In summary:
You can be outside of your home for work purposes where your place of work remains open and where you cannot work from home, including if your job involves working in other people's homes.
The full text can be found here New National Restrictions from 5 January (in England; there are similar texts available for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). Specifically relating to cleaners, the guidance continues: 'This guidance applies to those working in, visiting or delivering to home environments. These include, but are not limited to, people working in the following areas:
Note this guidance is for people who are fit and well, and is dependent on the following social distancing guidelines being followed:
The good news with regard to cleaning is that the cleaners can social distance from their clients very easily, and we would advise that, if you are at home when they are there, that you remain in a separate room to your cleaner.
If you are happy to adhere to the government guidelines - and if your cleaner has not been in touch already - then please just call the office and we will ensure that your cleaning continues.
Best regards
